What is an Ideal Weight?
There's no single "ideal" weight โ formulas give estimates based on height and gender. The most clinically meaningful measure is the healthy BMI range (18.5โ24.9), which defines a weight band rather than a single number.
The Formulas Explained
Devine (1974): originally developed for drug dosing โ men: 50kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft; women: 45.5kg + 2.3kg/inch. Robinson (1983) and Hamwi (1964) are similar refinements. All were developed on limited populations and should be treated as rough guides only.
Better Measures Than Weight Alone
Waist circumference is a strong indicator of health risk: the NHS suggests increased risk above 94cm (men) / 80cm (women) and high risk above 102cm / 88cm. Waist-to-height ratio (keep your waist below half your height) is increasingly used as a simple check.
