Converting Salary to Hourly Rate
Standard method: annual salary ÷ 52 weeks ÷ weekly hours. A £35,000 salary at 37.5 hrs/week = £17.95/hour. The "real" hourly rate excluding holiday is slightly higher since you're paid for ~5.6 weeks you don't work.
Pro Rata Pay Explained
Pro rata salary = full-time salary × (your hours ÷ full-time hours). A £35,000 FTE role at 22.5 hours instead of 37.5 = £21,000. Holiday entitlement is also pro-rated.
National Minimum Wage 2026/27
From April 2025: £12.71/hour for 21 and over (National Living Wage), £10.00 for 18–20, £7.55 for under-18s and apprentices. A full-time NLW worker (37.5hrs) earns approximately £23,810/year.
