What is a Unit?
One UK unit = 10ml (8g) of pure alcohol. Units = volume (ml) ร ABV% รท 1000. A pint of 5% lager is 2.8 units; a 175ml glass of 13% wine is 2.3 units; a 25ml single of 40% spirit is 1 unit.
The 14-Unit Guideline
UK Chief Medical Officers advise both men and women drink no more than 14 units per week โ roughly 6 pints of average-strength beer or 6 standard glasses of wine โ ideally spread over 3+ days with alcohol-free days.
Alcohol and Calories
Alcohol contains 7 kcal per gram โ nearly as calorific as fat. A pint of lager is ~180โ220 kcal; a large glass of wine ~230 kcal. Five pints a week adds roughly 1,000 kcal โ equivalent to an extra day's lunch.
