Fraction Arithmetic Rules
Adding/subtracting: find a common denominator first — a/b + c/d = (ad + cb)/bd, then simplify. Multiplying: multiply straight across — a/b × c/d = ac/bd. Dividing: flip the second fraction and multiply — a/b ÷ c/d = ad/bc.
Simplifying Fractions
Divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). 6/8 simplifies to 3/4 because GCD(6,8) = 2. Our calculator does this automatically using Euclid's algorithm.
Common Fraction–Decimal Conversions
1/2 = 0.5 · 1/3 ≈ 0.333 · 1/4 = 0.25 · 1/5 = 0.2 · 1/8 = 0.125 · 3/4 = 0.75 · 2/3 ≈ 0.667
