The Air Fryer Conversion Rule
The standard conversion: reduce the oven temperature by 20°C and the cooking time by 20%. An oven recipe at 200°C for 30 minutes becomes roughly 180°C for 24 minutes in an air fryer.
Why Air Fryers Cook Faster
Air fryers are compact convection ovens — a fan rapidly circulates hot air in a small chamber, transferring heat to food much faster than a conventional oven. The small space also preheats in 2–3 minutes versus 10–15 for an oven.
Air Fryer Tips
- Don't overcrowd the basket — air needs to circulate for crisping
- Shake or flip food halfway through
- Most foods need little or no oil — a light spray is enough
- Frozen foods (chips, nuggets) often have air fryer instructions on pack now
Energy Savings
Air fryers typically use 1–2kWh less than a full-size oven per use because of shorter cooking times and smaller heating volume — worth roughly 30–60p saved per cooking session at current electricity prices. Use our electricity cost calculator to check your own appliances.
